How to take AREX to Seoul?

One the transportation mode that I really love to take to and fro Incheon Airport and Seoul is AREX. It’s pretty easy, cheap and very convenient if you don’t have big luggage. Well…scratch that, for my standard even if you do have big luggage, it is still doable with AREX.

Myself..tried and tested with 33kgs luggage.

Consequence: painful shoulder, exhausted self and deep sleep all the way to Seoul hence missed my intended stop. 🙂

I took the AREX (Airport Express) from Incheon Airport to Hongik University Station and then transit to line 2 for Sinchon Station (where Sogang and Yonsei University is located). (Don’t be confused with Sincheon station). They sound similar but their location is worlds apart. Beware.

A Tip: Normally, if I take a taxi to Sinchon I will say it like this – “Sinchon station Yonsei University”. The taxi driver will never be confused.

The fare for all-stop train (일반 열차 ilban yeolcha):

From Incheon Airport to Seoul – 4.150 won (with T-Money Card)*

From Incheon Airport to Sinchon – 3,850won 4,050won (with T-Money Card)*.

*Price as of December 2016

My journey:
Incheon Airport –> Incheon Cargo Terminal –> Unseo –> Geomam –> Gyeyang –> Gimpo Airport –> Digital Media City –> Hongik University

There’s elevator to some parts of the station, but after transferring to subway Line 2, Sinchon station; there’s no elevator to go up to either exit 3 or 4.

The good: Cheap, convenient if your stay is somewhere near the AREX station

The bad: Not to ride when you have big luggages, no numbered seats unless you take the express train (직통열차 jiktong yeol cha) direct (no stop) to Seoul Station which sets you off at 8,000 won for adult.* (Promotional price until 31 December,2016. Normal price = 14,800 won)

How to go to AREX station from Incheon Airport?

You can walk straight out after departure gate and walk pass the airport limousine bus stop. After that walk pass the taxi or car waiting area and then take the escalator to go down towards Airport Railroad level.

Right after departure hall , take the escalator down (which is next to HANA bank/tour counter). Then, follow the signboards “Airport Railroad”, after which you will see an arrays of ticketing machines like the one below.

Last train Seoul bound : 2345 hours

Tmoney Card
If you already have a T-Money card, just use yours. I bought mine at 2.500 ~ 3,000 won per piece at any of the convenience store at the airport and then ask the cashier to top it up. Normally I ask for 10,000 won. One of my guests gave me the AREX card as a gift.

Otherwise, buy a single journey ticket to your destination. Like myself, down below I bought a single journey ticket with 500 won deposit. Total – 4,650won*. Once I reached Sinchon station, just refund the deposit at the refund machine.

AREX single journey ticket.

From Incheon Airport AREX station, tap once and at Hongik University AREX station tap again to exit. Use the same ticket to enter Hongik University Subway/Metro station and tap again when I exited Sinchon subway station.

My only wish: For ERL KLIA transit to be as cheap as AREX. ~~ Malaysia boleh!!

  4. Hello,

I'm a bit confuse. Can I or can't I buy the ticket from the airport to Euljiro 3-ga? Just need to transfer at the Hongik Univ. Station. If I look at the subway map, its a bit cheaper and just need to buy the ticket once at the airport.

Thank you so much for the information.

  6. Hi, good information about transportation in Korea! Here is one more tip for you! There is more promotion ‘Express train and T-money card(included 2,000won inside) combined package! Compared to original seperate fare (express train is 8,000won and T-money card is over 4,000won and need to charge money by yourself), This package looks so nice for travellers in Korea. If you want to buy this, you can check this one at Travel center in ICN. Thank you!
